We are excited to announce the launch of Strata's first major development milestone, Strata Devnet. Devnet is the first step in our sprint to becoming an EVM-compatible ZK rollup on bitcoin with a trust-minimized bridge, and the first step in our marathon to achieve direct ZK verification on bitcoin. For this release, we’ll be onboarding developers through a short application form that you can find on our website.
We’re looking for builders and partners who are excited about building an ecosystem around endgame money. You’ll be joining us at this alpha stage of the platform to experiment with building applications on one of the first native programmable scaling solutions for bitcoin.
We’ll be sending out emails with instructions on how to access devnet to developers who join us at this stage. Your feedback during this process will be key in helping us harden the protocol and the infrastructure for our next milestone, Strata Testnet I, which will be launched in a few months from today.
Open-sourcing the codebase
We’re excited to open-source the devnet codebase. You can find the codebase in our GitHub repo. After nearly a year of design and development, we’re thrilled to openly share the Strata protocol with the community.
Rather than using an out-of-the-box rollup SDK designed for another platform, we've built Strata’s rollup stack specifically for bitcoin from the ground up. This approach offers greater long-term flexibility in design compared to similar protocols.
What’s in this release
To find a complete description of our devnet platform, please take a look at our documentation site. Strata Devnet features an EVM-compatible execution layer together with a multisig bridge. Strata Devnet is running on a private bitcoin signet. At this stage, Strata only posts state commitments to the signet. We will add support for full onchain data availability in a subsequent release.
The Strata devnet bridge is a MuSig2 multisig bridge implementing the cooperative path of our work-in-progress BitMV2-based bridge. Support for the uncooperative path of our BitVM2-based bridge design is under active development and will also be added in a subsequent release. The team is simultaneously contributing to optimizing the core BitVM2 protocol whose onchain costs have already fallen tremendously in the last few months.
Developers will be able to deploy smart contracts on an EVM execution engine which provides full EVM compatibility at this stage. In addition, developers will be able to leverage Strata’s ERC-4337 account abstraction infrastructure.
